Convent Garden

WDG are civil and structural engineering designers for the Convent Garden development at Kinsale, Co. Cork. The planned development consists of 94 residential units on the site of the former St. Joseph’s Convent located on an elevated site above the historic town.
The residential development is an interesting mix of terraced, detached and apartment units including contemporary house designs, tastefully integrated with buildings of architectural and historical interest. WDG is working closely with JCA Architects and the developers, Cumnor Construction Limited, at the site where the initial phases have been completed and 31 units have already been occupied.
Completed work includes complex structural design of large reinforced concrete structure to support townhouses over an underground carpark. Ongoing work includes the design of modern single and two-storey high-end apartment units within the fabric of the former convent building. Internal site roadway design, including the integration of site services with extensive landscape design, has also been undertaken by WDG.
Richmond Rise

Construction is underway at the Richmond Rise housing development in Sallybrook, Glanmire. The three and four bedroom homes are being constructed in two building phases. The enabling works phase is particularly challenging due to the steep terrain to be negotiated by the access road and all site services for the development.
Walsh Design Group were involved from the feasibility and conceptual design stage through to the planning applications and the detailed design, and will be following through to completion. All the houses at Richmond Rise will comply with nZEB (Nearly Zero Energy Building) and so will be extremely energy-efficient for the future home-owners.
Station Road, Blarney

WDG were appointed by the main contractor Cumnor Construction Ltd., for the civil and structural design of 18 no. timber framed houses and associated site works to complete an existing housing estate in Blarney, Co. Cork on behalf of Cork County Council.
The brief was to deliver quality living accommodation in the form of one, two and three bedroom houses, being a mix of semi-detached and terraced typed dwellings sitting comfortably in context with the surrounding existing housing.
The works included the installation of new roadway and services, modifications to the existing green areas, traffic calming works at the estate entrance from Station Road, and resurfacing of the existing estate road to the site entrance.
Bluepool Upper, Kanturk

Units: 12
Design of 12 no. timber framed houses and associated site works at Kanturk, Co. Cork in partnership with Cumnor Construction Ltd. for Cork County Council. Civil works include the realignment of segments of the access roads leading to the houses.
These rapid-build houses are designed and constructed with quality materials to ensure maintenance requirements are minimised over time.
Earl’s Well

The initial work involved the management, completion and certification of 6 partially-completed large dwellings. WDG also secured planning permission and designed and managed the construction of a wastewater treatment facility.
WDG then took on the Lead Consultant role to deliver 12 large detached 4 and 5 bedroom dwellings, each sitting on half acre sites and ranging in size from 2500 to 3500 square foot. The houses comprise of traditional masonry, and all associated site development works were undertaken including roads and drainage (storm and foul sewers).
WDG acted as the assigned certifier for these units, completed under the BCAR Regulations. As design team leader, WDG inspected the works on an on-going basis, prepared site inspection reports. In addition to the house construction, the works involved extensive landscape design to be carried out.
Cluain Ard

Planning permission was secured in April 2020 to build 237 units, comprising 183 houses and 54 apartments in Ringmeen, Cobh. The large-scale development includes for childcare facilities and associated site works.
WDG are currently involved in Phase 1A, Phase 2A and Phase 2B.
Phase 1A involves the construction of 51 units and all associated site development works. Phases 2A and 2B together involve 46 units.
